Pakistan, Canada PMs Hold Talks on U.S.-Iran Recent Negotiations

(MENAFN) Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held talks Monday over the recent high-stakes US-Iran negotiations, as international efforts to sustain the fragile ceasefire intensify.

Sharif characterized the Islamabad discussions as "an important step towards peace," pledging that Pakistan would continue pressing both sides to uphold the ceasefire and "make meaningful progress towards de-escalation and regional peace and stability," according to his office.

Carney praised Pakistan's pivotal role in brokering the temporary truce and facilitating the rare direct dialogue between Washington and Tehran, the statement added.

The two leaders also turned to bilateral affairs, agreeing to deepen cooperation across agriculture, clean energy, mining, and investment. Sharif extended a formal invitation for Carney to visit Pakistan, with both sides committing to maintaining close and ongoing coordination.

The call comes days after Washington and Tehran — bound by a two-week ceasefire struck last week — held an unprecedented round of direct talks in Islamabad on Saturday aimed at ending the war that erupted on February 28. Those discussions concluded early Sunday without a breakthrough agreement.
